Coral Restoration at kutch

What has been done

The Biorock Coral, with help from Gujarat's forest department, is attempting for the first time a process to restore coral reefs using biorock or mineral accretion technology. A biorock structure was installed one nautical mile off the Mithapur coast in the Gulf of Kachchh.

Biorock is the name given to the substance formed by electro accumulation of minerals dissolved in seawater on steel structures that are lowered onto the sea bed and are connected to a power source, in this case solar panels that float on the surface.

About 100 volunteers are currently working at this location and they have observed good results in coral restoration.

Future work

The organisation is focussed on encouraging local population to help in this cause by spreading awareness. We hope that the coral reefs of this area will extend to uptil 0.8 miles from the shore.

The Biorock Coral uses this technology at sites where corals have been damaged to restore them. We train our volunteers to implement this technology and create their very own created coral reefs.
