Pulau gangga

Shore erosion is being controlled through biorock technology

Pulau Gangga

Coral restoration at Pulau Gangga

What has been done

The pulau gangga and many other nearby islands are facing high amounts of shore erosion. The beaches were reducing in height and width/ Biorock technology implementation was tried as a solution of this problem. Our volunteers along with local activists craeted their own coral reefs through biorock technology. These reefs obstructed the powerful waves of the oceana nd prevented shore erosion. The idea was a success and is now being expanded to other parts of the islands.

Within 1.5 years, a tremendous increase in beach height and width has been recorded. The aquatic life near the island has also flourished.

Future work

Many of the neighbouring islands are also facing shore erosion on large scale. They are under the threat of being drowned. The people are bound to move from their home to somewhere else. This process needs to be reversed as fast as it coul be.

there are a lot of such islands in North Sulawesi. The implementation of biorock technology on all these islands is a slow process. We need more volunteers to participate in this cause.
